Coffee in Ecuador:
Ecuador has a rich history of coffee production. The plant was first introduced in the 1860s on the Manabi coast and has since expanded into different regions including the Galapagos islands. The fertile soils and tropic environment were a perfect fit for coffee cultivation and has led to small, but respected exporter. Ecuador is one of 15 countries that produces both Arabica and Robusta varieties. While Ecuador is well renowned for its instant coffee, the country also has begun to produce excellent specialty coffees which has garnered it some attentions amongst coffee heads.
Santa Gertrudis Variety:
This special coffee hails from the Loja area, which sits at a higher elevation in southern Ecuador. This coffee collective has helped boost coffee infrastructure and facilities so local producers can mill and export their small lots which are renowned for their unique profiles. The coffee has a bright and clean acidity, with a floral taste full of notes of cranberry, orange, and a tea-like qualities.
